Upcountry Maui

Upcountry – Maui’s Finest Views

Maui’s Upcountry is situated on the North slopes of Mount Haleakala, Maui’s primary mountain. Upcountry features outrageous views, cool days, starry nights and a friendly, rustic atmosphere.

Join us in a little armchair tour of Maui’s Upcountry!

Makawao

Going from East to West, Makawao is the first Upcountry town we visit. Makawao is like a slice of the old West, Hawaiian-style. Center of Maui’s cattle country, Makawao is a very scenic little town with false-front storefronts, unique boutiques and paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys). Great place to hang for a morning, eat breakfast and watch the people parade.

Pukalani

Just West of Makawao is Pukalani (Hole in Heaven). Pukalani is Upcountry’s commercial center, with a post office, banks, shopping center and country club, complete with golf course.

Kula

Kula is the jewel of Upcountry’s crown, a mix of upscale homes, small farms, wide pastures and cross- valley views. This is one of Maui’s most desirable areas, with its perfect climate and rural ambiance, and is the location of the cottage. Even though it’s not really a town, Kula does have a couple of stores and gas stations as well as an excellent French restaurant, La Provence. We highly recommend the coffee and pastries there – go early, they sell out quickly!

Also worth mentioning are the Kula Lodge and Kula Bistro restaurants, both offering great food and service.

Kula is home to the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, Surfing Goat Dairy, Kula Botanical Garden, O’o Farm, Maui Wine, and the Upcountry Farmer’s Market, all worth a look.

Kula is also the access point for visiting Haleakala National Park.

Haleakala Crater

Haleakala Crater is a very popular visitor destination, and a great place to see the sunrise.
